“I will see you in the X Games of Barcelona”
The basque pro surfer inspire everyone to go to Barcelona the next May
Aritz Aranburu (1985, Zarautz) is a professional surfer and considered one of the best ‘barrels hunter’ among the surfers. He started to surf at the age of 7 in the Zarautz Surf Eskola and after becoming a member of the Basque Surf Federation (EHSF), he threw himself into competition in 1996 when he was only 11 years old.
Aritz was champion of Basque Country in different categories: under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-18 and has also participated in European championships, geting the fifth place two consecutive years in under-14 and under-16 categories. He began to compete in under-21 championships in 2001 and three years later, in 2004, he achieved his best qualification in junior ranking, being european runner-up. From 2005 the Basque surfer started competing in WQS (World Qualifying Series) in championships all over the world: Australia, Brasil, Japan, etc. The first 16 surfers in this circuit qualify for the WCT, the highest category that consists of the best 45 surfers in the world.
Without a doubt Aranburu is one of Europe’s most complete athlete to ever stand on a surfboard. After winning the ASP European Title in 2007, Aritz became the unique and first national surfer to reach the top and qualified for the ASP Top 45 in 2008. He competed in the WCT two years and nowadays he is combining his return to the elite with other projects like, for example, one of his passions, the free surf.
The basque surfer has accepted that he will try to go to Barcelona and watch the X Games. And you?
