Laia Sanz and Edgar Torronteras, crowned at X Games Foz do Iguaçu
The Summer X Games that took place in Brazil ended with a positive booth for our riders, both of them achieved one medal each
The X Games Foz do Iguaçu 2013 ended on Sunday with some surprising results, although most of the athletes that were expecting medals did accomplish their objective, thanks to extensive repertoire of tricks providing the spectators with a magnificent show. Especially noteworthy was the gold earned by the catalan rider Laia Sanz in her first participation in X Games contest, and the silver medal that Edgar Torronteras won in the Best Whip Moto X Final.
The X Games Foz do Iguaçu started with the Big Air Skateboarding Final, and closed this first day with the male and female Enduro X competition. In the first final of this important sport event, Bob Burnquist, the second most successful skater in the history of the X Games, didn’t disappoint and won the gold medal with a score of 88.33. Special triumph for him, he was competing in Brasil, where he was born. Elliot Sloan, a stylish skater, earned the silver medal, while Jake Brown got the bronze one.
In the men’s Enduro X, one of the greatest athletes of this modality and medal contender despite his fourth place in Los Angeles, Taddy Blazusiak, returned to the top of the podium and therefore won the gold medal. The silver was for Cody Webb, and David Knight took the bronze medal. Our rider Alfredo Gomez finished in ninth position.
In the women’s Enduro X competition, our rider Laia Sanz, defeated all of her rivals and ended the race in first place winning the gold medal, and exceeding all expectations because it was the first X Games she was competing. Maria Forsberg, defending champion and favorite to win the gold medal, ended in second place, and Tarah Gieger, third.
This exciting race closed the X Games action on Thursday, and on Friday three finals were going to take place: BMX Big Air, Moto X Best Whip, and Moto X Step Up.
In the first one, the BMX Big Air, Zack Warden improved what he achieved in Los Angeles (silver medal), and won the gold medal after an amazing third round where he scored 93.66. The other two riders that climbed to the podium were Chady Kagy, silver medal, and Morgan Wade, bronze.
In the second final of the day, Edgar Torronteras won the silver medal in the Best Whip Final after a great contest. Jeremy Stenberg was the only rider that got a better result than our rider, earning the gold medal, while Josh Hansen obtained the bronze one.
Finally, in the Step Up Final, last event on Friday, Bryce Hudson won the gold, Ronnie Renner the silver, and Libor Podmol.
The weekend began with the BMX Park Final. Kyle Baldock hung the gold medal after defeating Pat Casey, silver, and Dennis Enarson, bronze.
The Skateboarding Vert Final came next. The US athlete, Bucky Lasek, got to the top of the podium beating two Brazilian skaters: Sandro Dias and Marcelo Bastos (second and third position respectively).
Afterwards came the Street League Skateboarding Final, where Nyjah Huston won the contest with a 48.80 score. Remember that this league consists of eight tests, four Summer X Games and four own competitions of Street League.
Saturday ended with BMX Vert Final, BMX Dirt Final, and Speed & Style Moto X Final. Jamie Bestwick won the gold medal ahead of the Chilean athlete Coco Zurita, who was silver, and Steve McCann, bronze, in the BMX Vert Final. Kyle Baldock reached the glory with the gold medal in the BMX Dirt Final, and Brandon Dosch and Ryan Niquist, earned the silver and bronze respectively.
The victory in Moto X Speed & Style was for Lance Coury. Andre Villa finished in second place, and Mat Rebeaud, third. Unfortunately, Edgar Torronteras could only achieve a fifth place after he suffered a right ankle injury while he was training for this competition. The Cardedeu rider wrote on his official Facebook that he was “happy and now I have to get well in order to be in good conditions for the X Games Barcelona".
The last day of this year’s X Games Foz do Iguaçu concluded with four other finals. In the woman’s Skateboarding Street Final, Leticia Bufoni won the gold medal ahead of Lacey Baker and Jessica Florencio, who completed the podium. In RallyCross, Scott Speed was crowned with the gold medal, Toomas Heikkinen ended in second place, and Patrick Sandell in third position. In the Skateboarding Park Final, Pedro Barros achieved the gold, Rune Glifberg, the silver, and Ben Hatchell, bronze medal.
The last event of X Games Foz do Iguaçu was the Moto X Freestyle Final. Taka Higashino repeated his victory in Los Angeles, and won the gold medal in Brazil scoring 91.66. Rob Adelberg, got the silver medal, and Wes Agee, bronze medal.
