Kevin Robinson: “Riding a bike is who I am"
Known for his double flair, he always shows perseverance when he has an objective in mind
If there’s one rider in the world that doesn’t know what the word impossible means it’s Kevin Robinson. Effort and consistency, that’s how we can define this american, four-time medalist at the X Games, and one of the most experienced riders in action sports.
Born on December 19, 1971, in East Providence, Rhode Island, Robinson, who became a professional rider 21 years ago, remembers that it wasn’t easy to ride a bike when he was young. “Every day was like a battle. I grew up in New England, where dealing with the weather element was kind of tough. A lot of times the outdoor ramps were covered in snow, and we were the ones in charge of cleaning them with shovels. It was always a challenge to ride with full winter gloves”. However, what would have been a hindrance for some, for K-Rob, as he is called, it was a motivator.
When talking about his BMX career, this rider from Rhode Island alludes that perseverance is the key of success. In 2003 he dominated the flair, but it was in 2006 in Los Angeles when he pulled the double flair. “It was the best moment of my life. When you are working very hard and you hear people saying it’s impossible in a negative manner, I get my energy on it and I believe I can do it”.
It hasn’t always been perfect for Robinson, he has suffered from several injuries, something very common in sports. The American rider explains that he has improved his physical condition throughout his career. “My brothers are into bodybuilding. They always pushed me to start lifting weights, but I never listened. When I got older I starting working out and all of a sudden I was noticing changes when riding my bike. I got more comfortable on my bike and got a better control of it. The best of it was that I wasn’t getting injured so often, and when I did the recovery time was much shorter”.
Kevin Robinson also dedicates some of his life time to help children. In addition to taking care of his three children, he also helps disadvantaged children through the K-Rob Foundation. This is a non-profit foundation that helps children from East Providence to get involved in athletics when families can’t afford it. Lately we have paid both baseball and softball league fees”.
K-Rob doesn’t want to hang up his bike. “Riding my bike is who I am, it’s not a hobby. It’s who I’ve been for almost 30 years and I can’t just stop being who I am. I’ll continue to take care of myself, eating healthy food, and riding my bike”.
